Does it offer advanced scheduling capabilities? “To be effective, the EAM tool must be sophisticated, offering the insights required to distinguish between the long-term planning of a maintenance programme and short-term scheduling,” says Diedericks. “With a system-wide view, your company can meet changing demands without impacting production schedules.”
Does the software include analytical tools? “The system you choose should offer not just simple analytics, but more sophisticated tools for performing root cause and trend analyses as well. Look for role-based dashboards that enable you to make better business decisions.”
Are health, safety and environmental safeguards built into the software solution? “In the constant quest for sustainability and SHEQ management, it is vital that manufacturers choose an EAM solution that helps to ensure a safe environment,” adds Diedericks. “Features such as lockout/tagout, safety checklists, safety priority fields, and material safety data sheets should be included.”
Does the software offer notification and workflow features? “To increase asset productivity, it is essential that processes are automated. The EAM solution should alert a supervisor that maintenance is required, for example, or that a key warranty is expiring soon. This ensures the organisation is proactive, rather than reactive,” advises Diedericks.
Does it deliver maintenance optimisation? “Look for a system that includes capabilities for determining the right mix of failure-based maintenance (run to fail), use-based maintenance, preventive maintenance, and condition-based maintenance,” he adds.
Is it innovative, offering mobility and real-time access? “Deploy a system that lets you view up-to-date information when and where you need it the most,” concludes Diedericks. “Field service teams, for example, are infinitely more responsive and efficient when all systems are accessible via mobile devices.”
